Labor Day 2020 Will Be A Bust: Covid-19 Concerns Curb Labor Day Activities, According to Decision Analyst Survey

ARLINGTON, Texas—With Labor Day almost upon us, what are Americans planning to do in this most unusual year? Not much, according to a recent survey by Decision Analyst. When asked about plans for this year compared to what they would usually do, a large majority of Americans are “less likely” to engage in traditional Labor Day activities such as a picnic, barbecue, pool party, or a day at the lake or beach. Nearly 60% of U.S. adults are “less likely” to do these things this year. Fewer than 10% of U.S. adults say they are “more likely” to participate in these traditional Labor Day activities. The results of the nationwide survey by Decision Analyst are shown below.

Labor Day Activities

“In a year that has been filled with stress and confusion, Americans remain very concerned about Covid-19 and are not ready to get back to life as usual. Many of the traditional social and recreational activities from summer into fall are essentially cancelled this year, as most Americans will forego Labor Day picnics and trips to the beach,” according to Felicia Rogers, Executive Vice President of Decision Analyst. Although no notable differences exist by gender (not shown), younger adults—especially those under 30—are less likely than their older counterparts to say they will avoid picnics, barbecues, pool parties and other similar outdoor activities, or going to the lake or a beach to enjoy the last weekend of summer.

It does seem, however, that where one lives has some impact on plans. Those whose plans are “about the same” as usual are more likely to live in rural areas. The closer people live to cities, the less likely their Labor Day plans are to be typical.
